Doodle Jump is a 2D platformer with a doodle sprite that jumps on platforms. The sprite’s x-position is controlled by the device’s accelerometer and its y-velocity is determined by the platform’s type and height. The sprite can fire bullets by detecting the screen’s touch event. The game has various power-up, theme, mode, score, achievement, and leaderboard classes. The game loops until the sprite collides with an obstacle or enemy object. The game uses physics, graphics, sound, and input APIs.

In Doodle Jump, the aim is to guide a four-legged creature called "The Doodler" up a never-ending series of platforms without falling. The left side of the playing field wraps around to the right side. For devices with an accelerometer, players tilt the device from side to side to move the Doodler in the desired direction.

In Doodle Jump, the goal is to guide a four-legged, duster-like creature, whose name is Doodle, on a path across an endless series of platforms without falling. Players can get a short jolt from various objects such as propeller hats, jetpacks, rockets, springs or trampolines. There are also monsters and UFOs that Doodler must shoot at or jump on them, eliminating them. Shooting is done by tapping on different parts of the screen. There is no end game, but the end of each game occurs when the player falls (upon reaching the bottom of the screen), gets hit by a monster, gets involved in a black hole, or is abducted by a UFO. The newest updated version of Doodle Jump: Deluxe allows players to choose between versions of the game (Normal, Graveyard, Christmas, Jungle, Space, World Cup, Easter, Underwater, Halloween, Ninja, Arctic, or Pirate Ship.) without changing their name.
